I still haven't seen the new remastered deluxe edition DVD of the 1964 classic, "A Hard Day's Night" (Because I don't have a Blu-Ray disc player. Yes, I'm THAT retro.)
But I did manage to watch it on Hulu Plus last night. The first thing I noticed was the aspect ratio. Perfection! I'm not sure if that's how the original theatrical version was or intended to be. But this one is perfect. Just the right spot in between Wide and Full screen.
I have the old DVD and it's sharp and clear (this new print is even more pristine!) but I still kept my old VHS copy because it wasn't "Widescreen" presentation (in other words, no big black bars) and had a cute little "I'll Cry Instead" intro. I love The Beatles more than life itself, and it excites me to see this movie getting the well deserved Criterion treatment. Besides looking and sounding better than ever, it's loaded with special bonus features!
I plan on getting a Blu-Ray player just for this, plus "Magical Mystery Tour" and "Yellow Submarine" on Blu too. ("HELP!" dosen't seem to have anything new special features wise that the old DVD dosen't though). Now how about "Let It Be", and the 1960s Saturday morning cartoon Beatles series finally getting an official, authorized release?
If any "Powers That Be" just happen to be reading this...
Here's a not so subtle *HINT, HINT* ;-)
