Forgotten Stars Volume 2

You know those kind of actors that you know the face but not the name?
Their face looks so familiar because you've seen it so many places,
but you just can't pinpoint exactly where.
They could be a character actor in blockbusters
(Hey, somebody's got to play those mundane background supporting roles!)
or they could be the main star of a low budget B-movie. These unsung heroes are "forgotten stars". Today's spotlight is on...

                                                               John Bromfield
                                             (June 11, 1922 – September 19, 2005)

It's a shame how he never really made it big.
He was clearly tall, dark, and handsome with fabulous acting chops to match!

He appeared in countless movies. Ranging from sci-fi to western. His filmography includes...
Sorry, Wrong Number (1948)
Easy To Love (1953)
The Big Bluff (1955)
Three Bad Sisters (1956)

Crime Against Joe (1956)
Hot Cars (1956)
Revenge Of The Creature (1955, a sequel to Creature From The Black Lagoon.
Now a cult classic, it was one of the first movies to ever be shown in 3D!)
... to name a few.

But he's perhaps best known for playing the title role on a popular 1950s TV series
(which could also be considered as two shows, more on that in a minute...)
In 1956, he was cast as law enforcement officer Frank Morgan in the western themed crime/drama series, "Sheriff Of Cochise" later retitled by studio boss Desi Arnaz, Sr. as "U.S. Marshal".
It turned out to be more than just a simple name change! The show also changed script wise.
It became edgier and less campy than before.

Interesting Tid Bit: The real sheriff of Cochise County at the time, Jack Howard, visited the set once, when the program began and made Bromfield an honorary deputy!

While the show was somewhat short lived, it still became a ratings hit and a pivotal template for future western/crime television shows, as well as showcasing many actors who went on to become bigger stars later on (ironically enough, not including John himself.)

In 1960, Bromfield retired from acting to produce sports shows and work as a commercial fisherman. He was married but later divorced from actresses Corinne Calvet (1925-2001) and Larri Thomas (1932-2013). He died at the age of 83, survived by his third wife of 43 years, Mary Bromfield.

Obviously, the reason why he never became a household name is most likely because he retired from acting way too early on!
But here at Classic Cinema Central,
NO star is forgotten!
